Li (ethnos group)
The Li (黎 Pinyin Lì) ( Hlai ) are one of the 56 ethnic minorities alive in China at the sides of the Han (dominant ethnos group). They were a little more than 1,2 million at the end of the 20th century.
The majority of Li live at vast southern part of China on the island-province of Hainan, where they are the most natives.
During the Dynastie Sui they were indicated by the name Liliao , and now they name themselves the Sai .
They are held in high regard by the government of Beijing, because they fought at the side of the Chinese Communist party against the domination of the Kuomintang during the Chinese revolution.
Li have their own language, classified among the Langues sino-Tibetans. The Langue Li did not have a written form before the Années 1950, during which they adopted the Latin alphabet. The majority of them can include/understand or speak the Mandarin.
