Lewis H. Brereton

Lewis Hyde Brereton (born the June 21st 1890, dead the July 20th 1967) was an American general and a pioneer of the military aviation. During the Second world war, he was general in the United States Army Air Forces

Biography

Brereton was graduate US Naval Academy in 1911 and was one of the first graduates of the Signal Body Aviation School in 1913 (school of the troops of transmission of the air force).

During the First World War, Brereton ordered the 12th air squadron ( Aero Squadron ), one of the first air units on the western face. He became chief of the aviation of the first American army corps. After the armistice, it was named chief of the staff in the general headquarters of the Air Service of the third army.

Second world war

At the beginning of the Second world war, Brereton was ordering air forces in the Far East (FEAF) with the Filipino . After the Attack on Pearl Harbor, he asked the immediate attack of the Japanese bases Taiwan. The general Douglas MacArthur opposed it and the FEAF was destroyed later on the ground.

With the beginning of the year 1942, Brereton was named appointed commander of the air forces within the framework of the ABDACOM ( American-British-Dutch-Australian Command ) which unified the forces allied in the south-east of Asia and the south-western zone of the Pacific. In June 1942, it was named ordering air forces in the Middle East. This unit became thereafter the 9th USAAF.

At the end of the operations in the Middle East, Brereton was transferred with its unit in Europe to continue its activities in October 1943 there. The planes under its command carried out raids on the German refineries and oil installations with Ploieşti in Romania.

In August 1944, Brereton was named ordering 1st airborne army allied , a station which it ensured until the end of the war in Europe.

It took its retirement in 1948 after having been president of the military committee of connection for the American commission with atomic energy
