Levy Mwanawasa
Levy Patrick Mwanawasa (September 3rd 1948, Mufulira, Rhodesia of North) is a politician Zambia N, president in exercise of the République of Zambia since the January 2nd 2002.
Mwanawasa was born in Mufulira in Rhodesia from North (name of Zambia before its independence), at the border with the province of the Katanga (Belgian Congo at the time and from now on Democratic republic of Congo). It grows in a family of ten children. Mwanawasa obtains a diploma of right of the University of Zambia and starts to work in a law firm starting from 1974. In 1978, it founds its own cabinet Mwanawasa & Company before becoming, for one year, Solicitor General of Zambia. November 1st 1991, Mwanawasa is named vice-president by the president Frederick Chiluba and it leaves its cabinet in March 1992.
The December 8th 1991, the vice-president is victim of an traffic accident which causes the death of one of its advisers and serious wounds with Castro Chiluba, one of wire of the president. Sudden Mwanawasa of multiple fractures and is evacuated towards Johannesburg in South Africa to undergo an operation chirugicale there. After three months of hospitalization, Mwanawasa returns to Lusaka, the Zambian capital.
In 1994, Mwanawasa resigns of its post of vice-president, spreading out at the great day the corruption which gangrene the Zambian State and the fact that nobody respects the authority of the government in the administration. The former vice-president launches out in the countryside for the presidency of the old sole party, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (Movement for the democracy multi-partite or MANDELEVIUM ) in 1996, but undergoes a defeat vis-a-vis his former superior, president Chiluba.
President Chiluba cannot represent with the election of 2001, reached by the constitutional limit of two mandates. The executive national committee of the MANDELEVIUM invests Mwanawasa official candidate in August 2001. Mwanawasa is elected the December 27th 2001 vis-a-vis nine candidates of which the former vice-presidents Godfrey Miyanda and Christon Tembo but especially Anderson Mazoka of the Unified Party for National Development (Left unified for the national development or UPND ). This election gives place to much dispute on behalf of the opposition and in particular Mazoka which lost only of two points: 27,15% vis-a-vis the 29,16% of Mwanawasa. The observers of the European Union come to supervise the poll note many irregularities and declare it illegitimate. That does not change anything and Mwanawasa is invested the January 2nd 2002.
As of his taking up the duties, president Mwanawasa launches a great operation mani pulite whose key period is the setting in examination of former president Chiluba and many its close relations end 2003. Some see in this operation anti-corruption only one means for Mwanawasa of getting rid of the factions of the MANDELEVIUM which refuse its seizure on the party, and of putting Chiluba off-side.
Mwanawasa is married in second weddings with Maureen, the couple has four children, and it has moreover two children of its first marriage: Miriam and Patrick. Maureen Mwanawasa is member of the Témoins of Jéhovah.
