Level off detail

LOD is an abbreviation for level off detail which means level of detail . It is about a technique used in the modeling 3D real-time (mainly in the Video game), which defines the level of detail of an object following the distance which separates them from a user

Problem

Today, the Modélisation 3D in real-time represents a very great potential, and tends to be democratized. Real-time implies however a certain constraint: that of fluidity.

Indeed, more one animation uses faces in three dimensions, more posting is likely to weigh down and thus to prevent the fluidity of the scene.

It is to cure this problem that the principle of the level off detail at elaborate summer.

Principle

According to the distance to which an object in 3D is seen, the human eye does not perceive the details in the same way. In order to offer a better fluidity without much loss of detail, there is possibility for the developer of reducing the number of polygons according to the distance.
  • Thus, for an object moved away, one will create a not very precise model.

  • For a closer model, the object 3D a little more complex and will be worked.
  • For a sight of very close, the whole of the details will be visible.

Limits

This evolution of complexity is done in real-time. It thus will be necessary to determine with which distance such or such model will apply a certain detail. In addition, the transition from a model little complexes with a very complex model (and vice versa) must be relatively discrete and perceived the least possible with the eye.
