Lev Mikhaïlov
Lev Mikhaïlov (in) (born on May 29th, 1936 in Bereziovka, close to Krasnoïarsk, and dead on February 9th, 2003 with Malaga, Spain) is a Clarinettiste and Russian Saxophoniste Soviet then.
He began his studies of the clarinet at the Military Musical School of Novossibirsk. After finishing it was sent to the Special Orchestra of the Ministry for the Defense from the USSR in Moscow. In 1958 it entered to the Conservatoire of Moscow, or its professor of clarinet was Alexandre Volodine. During some time Mikhaïlov was clarinet solo with the Orchestra of Central Television under the direction of Iouri Silantiev. Mikhailov obtains the first price of contest during world Fête of the young people and students in Helsinki in 1962 and that of contest of the instrumentalists of the USSR with Leningrad in 1963.
At 1963 it is graduate and one proposes to him a place of professor of clarinet in the Academy. Mikhaïlov becomes clarinet solo of Théâtre Bolchoï, he also works with the Symphony orchestra of State of the USSR under the direction of Evgueni Svetlanov and with the Orchestra of Television and the Radio of State. It is at this time that it makes its first recordings as soloist. It performe several works of the modern type-setters, such as Berg, Hindemith, Poulenc. These modern type-setters had passed for " formalistes" and it was for the first time in the USSR that one played their compositions for the clarinet. Mikhaïlov was impassioned nevertheless for the traditional chamber music, it takes part in the execution of Symphony in concert for winds of Mozart, Octette of Schubert and Pathetic Trio of Glinka.
Already with the orchestra of Ministry for Defense, Mikhailov impassions saxophone and learns it. During its studies with the Academy it gained sometimes while playing of the saxophone in big band of restaurant. In years 1960s, the saxophone was very rare for the USSR, or one identified it with " art imperialistic and bourgeois" , i.e. the Jazz. It existed the sentence there: " The saxophone is with a step of the couteau". Thus it was difficult enough for Mikhaïlov to advance it. Nevertheless, he plays the part of the saxophone in Dances Symphoniques of Rachmaninov, with the " Tables of Exposition" of Moussorgski-Ravel, with the Bolero of Ravel. In 1974 it arrived at the foundation of the traditional class of saxophone at the Academy. The same year it received the world invitation with the Congress of the saxophonists in France. With assistance of Dmitri Kabalevski one allowed him to go there. Its formidable play upset the audience and the jury, Mikhaïlov obtained the Grand Prix of this Congress: the saxophone Dresser.
Certain type-setters dedicated its compositions for clarinet and saxophone to him: Edouard Artiomov, Edison Denisov, Nikolai Peïko, Sofia Goubaïdoulina. He played with Maria Iudina, Victor Pikaïzen, Gidon Kremer and other musicians famous. A few years after the opening of the class of saxophone to the Academy, Mikhailov founded the traditional Quartet of saxophones.
Among the pupils of Mikhaïlov let us quote Valeri Berezin, professor of the Academy of Moscow, Igor Panasiuk, clarinet solo with the Philharmonic orchestra of Moscow, Alexandre Oseitchouk, celebrates it saxophonist of jazz.
At 1986 Mikhaïlov went to Spain to work there with the Symphony orchestra of Malaga. It is over there that he dies in 2003. It is buried with the cemetery of Malaga.
The majority of its recordings (as clarinettist and as saxophonist) are with phonotèque Academy of Moscow. Only one CD published in 2004 is a collection of the recordings of the years 1963-67. This disc contains works of Debussy (Dance of Puck and Bryère, arranged for clarinet and piano), Poulenc (Sonata for clarinet and piano), Honegger (Sonatine for clarinet and piano), Stravinski (Three parts for clarinet alone), Berg (Four parts for clarinet and piano), Hindemith (Sonata for clarinet and piano) and Bartok (Contrasts for violin, clarinet and piano), performés by Mikhaïlov with Maria Iudina (piano) and Victor Pikaïzen (violin).
