The letter is one of the Signe S graphic S forming a Alphabet and being used to transcribe a Langue.

The origin of this word inherited the Latin ( subparagraph ) is unknown. The etymological Dictionary of the Latin language of Ernout and Meillet announces a possible Greek source or an Etruscan loan , “ypothèse clever and tempting, but not rigorously demonstrable. ”

The simple Word, unit carrying significance of a given language, is an assembly of one or more letters, possibly supplemented by signs Diacritique S (Accent S, Cédille, points, hooks, Tilde, round, etc). The letters of a word are juxtaposed in a conventional way: in French, they are horizontally aligned and written from left to right.

The C-W communication of the same letter can vary:

  • for a couple of letters given, often a doubling of the same letter: in German, the character ß replaces the couple S S;
  • according to its place in the word; for example:
    • the Greek letter σ is written at the end of a word (it is a contextual Variante);
    • use of the capital for the initial one of certain words.
