Leto Atréides

The Duc Leto I Atréides (10140-10191) is a character of Dune , a work of Frank Herbert. It is also called “red Duke” by the Emperor.

The family Atréides governs Caladan, the luxuriant planet, since twenty generations when Leto receives the planet Arrakis of the emperor Shaddam IV. Leto is the son of the duke Paulus Atréides in the versions of Brian Herbert or of the Duke Mintor Atréides in the versions of Frank Herbert, killed into 10163 by a bull of Salusa in a conspiracy where his/her mother Dame Héléna Richese is implied. Leto preserves the head of the bull, like remembering macabre, but rich of lesson, this event. It is suspended on the top of the throne of Castel Caladan, then in the big room of Arrakeen

Of her first concubine Kailea, sister of her best friend Rhombur Vernius, Leto has a son, Victor, which dies in an attack organized against Leto, which escapes from it miraculeusement. Kailea is implied in this attack, and is banished.

Politically insulated within the Landsraad, it agrees to take as concubine a sister of the Bene Gesserit, Dame Jessica. He once asserts Duc in exile in the desert. Paul is promised with a great reigning future of charismatic leader thus much longer than his/her father.
