The Duc Leto I Atréides (10140-10191) is a character of Dune , a work of Frank Herbert. It is also called “red Duke” by the Emperor.

The family Atréides governs Caladan, the luxuriant planet, since twenty generations when Leto receives the planet Arrakis of the emperor Shaddam IV. Leto is the son of the duke Paulus Atréides in the versions of Brian Herbert or of the Duke Mintor Atréides in the versions of Frank Herbert, killed into 10163 by a bull of Salusa in a conspiracy where his/her mother Dame Héléna Richese is implied. Leto preserves the head of the bull, like remembering macabre, but rich of lesson, this event. It is suspended on the top of the throne of Castel Caladan, then in the big room of Arrakeen

Of her first concubine Kailea, sister of her best friend Rhombur Vernius, Leto has a son, Victor, which dies in an attack organized against Leto, which escapes from it miraculeusement. Kailea is implied in this attack, and is banished.

Politically insulated within the Landsraad, it agrees to take as concubine a sister of the Bene Gesserit, Dame Jessica. Ignoramus that Jessica is the girl of the baron Vladimir Harkonnen his worst enemy, it obtains a second wire - Jessica not taking account of the instructions of the Bene Gesserit which had required a girl of him. This wire is Paul Muad' Dib. She remains her concubine, because it wishes to preserve the possibility of carrying out a political marriage with a princess of another Grande House, in order to then improve the position of its house in difficulty.

At the time or the cycle of Dune starts, the Duke has just received the planet Arrakis on behalf of the emperor, succeeding decades of domination Harkonnen. It is actually about a plot organized by the Empereur and the Harkonnen, assisted Guilde to recover planet while getting rid of a dangerous adversary. The duke is betrayed on Arrakis by his personal doctor, the doctor Yueh, doctor of the school Suk with particularly strong conditioning. This last the book with the Baron Harkonnen. Yueh makes it possible all the same to him to poison the Baron Harkonnen, thanks to a false tooth containing a capsule of poison in the form of mortal gas, but Leto only manages to kill Piter de Vries the Mentat - assassin of the baron. Shortly after its death, Lady Jessica, taken refuge at the Fremens, gives the day to his/her daughter, Alias. In the following books, Paul does not cease referring to the paragon of virtue left in heritage by his/her father, in the same manner that Leto itself referred to the example of Paulus Atréides. He once asserts Duc in exile in the desert. Paul is promised with a great reigning future of charismatic leader thus much longer than his/her father.
