History
Country house created in 1335, Lestelle-Bétharram is a very old place of pilgrimage. The tradition reports indeed that the Vierge saved an young girl of the drowning there by tightening a branch under the bridge to him (bétharram means beautiful branch as inhabitant of Béarn) and more than eighty miracles would have been listed there with the XVII° century. The sanctuary of the XVI° and XVII° is a jewel of the Baroque art in Béarn. In 1837 Saint Michel Garicoïts founded the college Notre-Dame de Bétharram, head office of the Congregation of the Fathers of the Sacred Heart that a double vocation of mission and teaching brought to essaimer in the whole world (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ivory Coast, China…). One can see in the vault his coffin out of glass and an end of his inch.
The museum of the Congregation of the Fathers of Lestelle-Bétharram made up of accumulations of objects throughout the centuries, has many collections, prehistory at modern times, in relation to the regional history and constitutes with him only a place of visit impossible to circumvent in Béarn.
It is with Lestelle-Bétharram then manifestly known for its miracles, that Bernadette Soubirous very often came. She brought back from there the chain which she held during the appearance of the Vierge to Lourdes.
