Origin of the vampires according to Anne Rice

In the pre-Pharaonic ancient Egypt, king Enkil and the Akasha queen (become later Osiris and Isis in the legends of the mortals) are assassinated in a haunted house. Whereas they were almost emptied of their Sang, a spirit in search of a body takes possession of their bodies, in particular of their blood, and eternally maintains them in life, although their bodies died, on the condition of absorbing fresh blood regularly.

They have the possibility of making other vampires almost completely by emptying mortals of their blood, then in their making absorb their own blood had by the spirit.

Enkil and Akasha are always “in life” nowadays, but remain almost always motionless, being nourished almost more. Any wound which is inflicted to them is inflicted with all the vampires of the Earth, this is why they are “Those Which Should Be kept”. If they are exposed in the light of the Sun, all the vampires of the Earth are flarings.
