Less than one quarter of second to live

Less than one quarter of second to live is a cartoon of Jean-Christophe Menu (drawing) and Lewis Trondheim (scenario) published for the first time in 1990 with the editions Association, in the collection Éperluette. It was the subject of a republication in 1996. It is about a One shot. This work is described as OuBaPien by anticipation , because created starting from a Contrainte artistic volunteer, but carried out before is founded and formalized this committee.

OuBaPienne constraint

The artistic constraint employed here is the iconic iteration : Jean-Christophe Menu initially drew four boxes without text that Lewis Trondheim assembled to create a score of strips of four boxes, sometimes employing in a strip one only of the four labels (four times). Trondheim also added text.

Indicator which the process could give of good performances, but that the number of possible combinations was too weak, Menu drew four additional boxes, which made it possible Trondheim to create hundred strips.

These hundred strips thus constitute this album. They can be read independently from/to each other but the repetition of the boxes gives a strong coherence to the whole which ends up forming a followed history.

The eight boxes represent:

  • a man sitting on a rock
  • a man vis-a-vis a clamping plate
  • a man sitting by ground, under a crescent of the moon
  • a hut at the edge of water

Then:

  • a man facing a rock
  • a hut at the edge of a cliff, with the foot of cliff, a man has the feet in water
  • a clamping plate on a water lily
  • somebody which one sees only the legs, the trunk being buried under ground, the whole under a crescent of the moon

Synopsis

The man is with the research of the truth. He believes to find a god in the person of the clamping plate. The rock has fear of dying while wearing. In the hut, a man is persuaded that the universe is summarized inside its hut.
