Leskovac , in Serb Cyrillic Лесковац, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the district of Jablanica. Leskovac is the administrative center of the district. In 2002, the city counted 63.185 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is center 156.252.
Leskovac is located at the foot of the mount Hisar, to 290 km of Belgrade.
At the 12th century, Stefan Nemanja accepted the area in gift of the Byzantine Empire. With this épque, the city was called Dubočica. One finds the name of Leskovac for the first time in a document of the 14th century. The Turks called it Hisar, term which means " the forteresse".
In the middle of the 19th century, Leskovac was, by its population, the second town of Serbia after Belgrade; it was specialized in textile industry, so much so that it was called “small the Manchester”.
The current economic situation is undoubtedly less flourishing; on the other hand, Leskovac is with Niš one of the economic and cultural centers of Serbia of the South.
The geneticist Miodrag Stojković was born in Leskovac.
To the 12th century the Greek king Manojlo offers to Nemanja the territory of Dubocica where Leskovac is. In 1348, the Tsar Stefan Dusan offers the village with the monastery Hilendar. In 1395 the nun Efimija (Milica reindeer) with the wire Vukan and Stefan offer to Svetogorski a monastery, a house and two servants. In 1837 the French geographer Ami Drunk writes that Leskovac has 3000 houses (2400 Christian women, 500 Turkish, 30 gypsies and 10 Jewish), that is to say in all: 15000 inhabitants. Leskovac was the center of Pasaluk de Leskovac. The first factory of spinning mill is open in 1884 in the village of Stajkovce. Follows a cotton factory in 1896. In 1895 Zika Obrenovic installs a printing works.
In 1938 Leskovac with a population of 18.000 inhabitants is one of the industrial centers of Yugoslavia. The industry of the cotton of Leskovac with Vucje I Grdelica then accounted for 40% of the production of textile of Yugoslavia. The city at the time has 3 textile factories, 5 foundries, 3 ceramics factories, 6 mills (capacity of 15.000 coaches/ass), of the beer, soap, gum factories, of ice, 375 merchants, 579 craftsmen. In 1988 the bank of Leskovac has a capital of 713 million dinars of time. The city has a hospital, 10 coffees, 16 lawyers, 110 streets, 5 libraries, and a powerplant.
Six and eight April 1941 the city is to bombard, the station and the streets principal towards Hisar are destroyed and the foundry “Sava”. Allemandes enters the city on April 12th, 1941. September 6th, 1944 its reason the American bombers B29, 50 planes bombarding the city. The city is completmont destroyed, estimate is very broad the government according to the war estimates between 2.5 and 4 thousand died and 1840 building. The city is rebuilt until 1948.
