Lepidogalaxias salamandroides
The Lepidogalaxias salamandroides is the only species of the family of the Lepidogalaxiidae. It was described for the first time in 1961. One finds it only in acid water the ponds of the Tourbière S of the western south of the Western Australia. It is a very small fish being approximately 7 cm long. It with the characteristic to be able to hide in sand when the ponds in which he lives desiccate. Contrary to the species of the " kind; Galaxias" whose family approaches (Galaxiidae), this fish has scales. Moreover, it with the characteristic to be able to stir up the head! (it is the only fish which can do it). Thus, as it has a restricted visibility, it can supervise the neighborhoods rather by stirring up the head than the eyes. It can thus fold the nape of the neck thanks to the first vertebrae which are separated by broad hiatuses. (" Sources; The Large Book of Poissons" (Dr. John R. Paxton, Dr. William NR. Eschmeyer), with the Editions France-Leisures/Bordered of 1994).
