Leopoldsberg

The Leopoldsberg is a Montagne located at the XIX {{E}} district of Vienna, Döbling, in Austria. Its principal part culminates with 425 meters. Until 1693, Leopoldsberg is called Kahlenberg .

Geography

Leopoldsberg is a prolongation of the the Alps in the North-East and fact left the flyschs from a geological point of view. The “mountain of Léopold” which is with the Wienerwald is also appreciated for the sight that one has since the top on the neighborhoods.

History

First traces of dwelling date from the Civilization of the fields of ballot boxes (1300 - 1200 av. J. - C.). At second century BC, the Celtes are established in Leopoldsberg.

In the written sources, the mountain appears under the name of Chalwenberge for first once between 1130 and 1136. This “mountain bald person” must are name either with its arid slopes on the side of the the Danube or at its top deforested for the construction of a fortress. Indeed, a Oppidum exists there already time of the Romains, at the 12th century, Léopold III made there build a fortress which is used to defend the country of the Magyars. Léopold itself dies in its fortress in 1136.

As of 1304, the northern slope is used for the culture of the vine. The fortress at the top often changes owner in the following centuries. Between 1253 and 1258 it belongs to Ottokar II Přemysl, in 1287/1288, Albert I {{er}} hides there in front of the rebels Viennese and makes increase the fortress on several occasions. In 1484, Matthias Corvinus conquers the fortress which falls to the hands from the Habsbourgs in 1498. In 1529, the fortress is put at front light the arrival of the Turks.

The Empereur Léopold I {{er}} makes donation of the “vault of Léopold” while remaining faithful to its oath in the case of a disappearance of the Peste in 1679 which is however destroyed by the Turks in 1683. After the victory against the Turks, the vault is rebuilt is dedicated to holy Léopold in 1693, from where the name of “Leopoldsberg”. The Sauberg at east coast rebaptized Kahlenberg .

Under Joseph II, the vault is profaned and again devoted by the Monastère of Klosterneuburg in 1798. A castle builds in 1718 is destroyed in a Incendie in 1891.

Since 1935, the Wiener Höhenstrasse connects Leopoldsberg to Kahlenberg. The line of bus 38A makes it possible to go there since Heiligenstadt.
