Leopoldo Galtieri

Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri (born in Castelar, province of Buenos Aires, the July 15th 1926 - died with Buenos Aires, the January 12th 2003) was a military dictator Argentinian which occupied the presidency of the Nation of the December 22nd 1981 with the June 18th 1982, for the period known as of Proceso de Reorganización Nacional . To contain the popular discontent growing vis-a-vis the political situation and economic country, it tried to deviate the tensions by starting the Guerre of the Falklands. It gave up its load following the failure of this operation. Its actions as ordering armed forces brought to its judgment by the Supreme council of the Armed forces during the mandate of Raúl Alfonsín. It was grâcié by Carlos Menem, but died by achieving preventive prison under domiciliary stop and this for other facts.

Beginnings

Galtieri was born in Castelar, in province of Buenos Aires in 1926. At the 17 years age it entered to the army and left engineer the military College. It was also graduate Military academy of Americas of rather sinister reputation. After 25 years of service, Galtieri was named ordering body of the engineers of the army in 1975, in the same promotion which led Jorge Rafael Videla to occupy the post of Commander-in-chief of the Armed forces. In 1981 it integrated the military junta, with Jose Anaya and Basilio Lami Dozo.

This year, after the dismissal of Videla as president and the promotion of Roberto Eduardo Violated, Galtieri made an official visit in the United States where it was accepted by the representatives of the administration Reagan which considered, in the context of the Cold war, the Argentinian military government like an ally in his fight against the Communisme.
