Christian Léopold Freiherr von Buch ( Léopold de Buch ) (April 26th 1774 with Stolpe (Uckermark) - March 4th 1853, Berlin) German geologist is a . He contributes important shares to the geology of first half of the 19th century.

He visited the Vesuvius, the extinct volcanos of the Auvergne, the the Alps and the mountains of the Germany, the Scandinavian islands, the Hébrides, the Canary islands, made take great steps with geology and the Paléontologie, and in reward of its services was named Chambellan of the King de Prusse. In company of Alexander von Humboldt he studied with Abraham Gottlob Werner, of which he adopted initially the Neptunisme, but adopted then with the Plutonisme and the theory of risings. It was interested mainly in the volcanicity, the Fossile S and the Stratigraphie. It is known nowadays for its definition of the Jurassic .

He was member of the Académie of Berlin and associated Institut of France. Leopold von Buch became foreign member of the Royal Society the May 15th 1828. In 1842 he is prize winner of the Médaille Wollaston
