Leonding (population: 25000 inhabitants) is a city in the north of the Austria. Located at the west of Linz, the city is bordering on Wilhering and Pasching in the west and Traun in the south. In north, the the Danube represents a natural border. Colonized very early, the area around Leonding is populated since the Neolithic . The discovery of many tombs attests it.

It is supposed that the most former known poet of “lyric of love Danubian”, DER von Kürenberg, lived in the area of Linz (perhaps in Leonding) during the 12th century.

It is in 1800 that the presbytery and several farms are besieged by 1500 of the French soldiers who requisitioned housing and food products for one period of several months. After bloody fights, the Austrian troops succeeded in driving out besieging them. The “Franzosenstein” (Pierre of the French) returns testimony of this historical episode which cost the life of many French soldiers. During the years 1830 up to 1832, the archduke Maximilien d' Este made build 32 turns of fortification around Linz in order to protect the capital from High-Austria. Last nine turns are on the territory of the town of Leonding. Since 1999, one of these historical buildings, all still intact, shelters the Municipal Museum.

Separately the towers built under the reign of Maximilien, Leonding has another building of historical interest: Tirolerhof. It is about the farm that the Emperor Napoleon I {{er}}, assigned with the family of Andreas Hofer, combatant for the freedom of the the Tyrol, after its execution with Mantoue in 1810.

One of the most known inhabitants of Leonding is the future German chancellor and führer, Adolf Hitler, which lived there of 1898 to 1905 with his/her parents Alois and Klara which were buried with the cemetery of Leonding.

It is especially thanks to its industrial companies like “Ebner Industrieofenbau” (producing of blast furnaces) and “Rosenbauer” (producing of trucks of firemen) that the town of Leonding is known in the whole world.

In the field of the sport, Leonding makes speak about it in connection with the Annual World Tournament of Judo on the occasion of which many Olympic champions give each other appointment.

For a few years - because of soft climatic conditions - one has cultivated the Vigne there. So the town of Leonding can be praised to be the greatest viticultural area of High-Austria.
