Leonard Nathan
Leonard E. Nathan (born in 1924 with El Monte, Comté of Los Angeles, California - died the June 3rd 2007 with Kensington, California) was an academic, Poète, translator and Critique American arts person , which was, of 1968 with 1991, professor with the the University of California to Berkeley, where he taught the Rhétorique.
Biography
Leonard Nathan was the immigrant grandson of Juif S of Europe of the East. His/her father, Jack, had a printing works. He made his secondary studies with the High school of El Monte which he left graduate in 1943, before joining at once the army to fight in Europe.After its demobilization, it settled with an uncle with Los Angeles and integrated in 1947 the the University of California in Berkeley, where it obtained its diploma of graduate in English (1950), a Mastère (1952) and a doctorate (1961). It was then recruited like reader in the department of Linguistique of the UCLA, before becoming associated professor in 1965 and professor in 1968.
During its studies, it created, with his friend and school-fellow George Hochfield, a review of poetry, which they called The Formalist , this title having been deliberately selected to express their dissatisfaction in front of “the abandonment with the traditional forms by the modern poets. ”
In 1949, it meets Carol, which was to become his wife, and with which it had three children: a son (Andrew) and two girls (Julia and Miriam). The family settled with Kensington.
Ted Kooser, professor of English Literature with the University of Nebraska to Lincoln and recent prize winner of a price of poetry, which regards Leonard Nathan as one of his Masters and who had maintained a correspondence with him in the Années 1970 after having complimented it for a poetry read in a magazine, particularly appreciates its “saving in words”. After its disappearance, he declared: “It counted with the number of the best poets of its generation and will miss with all those which practice this Article”
Leonard Nathan is deceased the June 3rd 2007 at the 82 years age.
Work
Leonard Nathan is the author of seventeen volumes of poetry. He also wrote to a great number of critical arts persons and translated the work of several poets. He collaborated in particular with Czesław Miłosz for the translation of poems of Anna Świrszczyńska (published under the pseudonym of Anna Swir ) or of Alexander Wat.He is regarded as a Master of short poetries in which two or three stylistic devices are placed in what can be looked like a stage, as in a drama.
In connection with Diary off has Left-Handed Birdwatcher (1996), John C. Kricher estimates that: “Leonard Nathan captures a single dimension which expresses the reasons for which some among us take such an amount of pleasure in the observation of the birds. (...) The observers of birds should appreciate at the same time the pleasure and the perspicacity of this book. ”
The poems of Leonard Nathan were also published in The New Yorker , The Atlantic, the New England Review and The Georgia Review , among other publications.
