The American secret service and Soviet Union
In 2002, Leonard Leshuk publishes U.S. Intelligence Perceptions off Soviet Power 1921-1946 , a study - qualified Unique and groundbreaking work - dedicated to the perception of the Soviet Union by the American intelligence, the secret services, of 1921 with 1946. On the basis of old documents classified of U.S. Intelligence , Dr. Leshuk is particularly interested in the evaluation of information in possession of the secret services and the perception which rose from it. He thus pointed incompetences and kindnesses which carried out the US governments to deeply underestimate the economic conditions, soldiers and policies of the Soviet Union.
The genocide in Ukraine or Holodomor
In 2003, Leonard Leshuk took part as a lecturer in conferences devoted to the Holodomor.
The November 10th 2003, the conference " The Man-Made Great Famine in Ukraine off 1932-33 (Holodomor) " , Co-organized by the Ukrainian Studies Progra m, the Harriman Institute , the Ukrainian Mission to the United Nations , the Shevchenko Scientific Society , the Ukrainian Congress Committee off America and the Ukrainian Academy off Arts and Sciences in America , was held with the Université of Columbia, chaired by the historian Mark von Hagen. Leonard Leshuk took part in the third debate: The Ukrainian Famine-Genocide in Menory and The Arts , in company of Volodymyr Lozytskyi, presenting documents Communist party, of Volodymyr Danylenko, presenting documents of Kyiv Oblast Files, and Yury Shapoval presenting documents of the SBU and FSB) .
The November 13rd 2003, it, the embassy of Ukraine in the United States, the Ukrainian Congress Committee off America and U.S. - Ukraine Foundation took part in a conference to examine new information available on the Ukrainian famine, the international reaction to this drama, the criteria which make a genocide of it. The lecturer, Undersecretary for Total Affairs , of the Départment of American State , indicated then: “Each year, we learn more and more about the famien in Ukraine. And yet, it is still difficult to seize the hugeness of the tragedy: in what was the attic of the USSR, of the million men and women were literally condemned to die of hunger”. Leonard Leshuk took part in the second debate of the conference which related to the international reaction of the time. Leshuk and Eugene Fishel of the Départment of American State , were appropriate that there were precise reports of the international press on this organized famine, in particular those of the British journalists of the time, like Malcolm Muggeridge or Garrett Jones. These testimonys were largely drawn aside by the positive press coverage of the Soviet Union operated by the journalists seeking the favors of the Soviet government. The most famous example is that of the journalist of the The NewYork Times which denied the famine and accepted the Prix Pulitzer in 1932 for its reports on the Soviet Union. At that time the US government thus ques the other Western governments regarded the Ukrainian famine as an internal business with the URRS. Moreover, the United States, into full Great depression, could not mortgage their diplomatic relations and commercial with the immense Soviet market.
