Leonard Bernstein is a Compositeur, Leader and American Pianiste , born with Lawrence (Massachusetts) the August 25th 1918 and died with New York the October 14th 1990.

Biography

Leader and pedagog

Bernstein makes its studies with the Université of Harvard until 1939, then meets the leaders Fritz Reiner, Dimitri Mitropoulos, then Serge Koussevitzky of which it becomes assisting it in 1940 with Tanglewood. It is named assisting chief of the Philharmonic orchestra of New York as of 1943 before returning in Tanglewood in order to direct and teaching as from 1951. From 1958 to 1973, it presents the Young People' S Concerts on television, emissions during which it shows all his qualities of pedagog near the children who discover the classical music in a ludic way.

It is named musical director of the Philharmonic orchestra of New York of 1958 to 1969 and acquires an international reputation on the one hand as leader and on the other hand as type-setter in particular with the Musical comedy West Side Story (1957).

Leader considered for his energy fulgurating as well with the repetitions as with the concerts, it directed the greatest formations of this world: in addition to the Philharmonic one of New York, it also directed very frequently the Philharmonic orchestra of Israel, the Philharmonic orchestra of Vienna (where it had evil to make there accept the music of Mahler), the Orchestre of Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Symphony orchestra of London and the National orchestra of France. It had only one collaboration with the Philharmonic orchestra of Berlin, whose the recording live testifies very succeeded to the 9 {{E}} symphony of Mahler in 1979. It was at ease in all the repertories, with a clear preference for Gustav Mahler (it said “Mahler, it is me! ”).

Type-setter

Prolific type-setter, he is the author of three Symphonie S, two opera S, among a very great number of other works. But what characterizes mainly Bernstein, it is its ease to be passed from one style to the other: jazz ( West Side Story , Wonderful Town ), with the blues-gospel ( Farmhouse ), while passing by certain points of Dodecaphony (in its first works, however disavowed thereafter).
