Alexandre Ottaviano de Médicis (Florence, June 2nd 1535 - Rome, April 27th 1605), elected pope on April 1st 1605 under the name of Leon XI (in Latin Leo XI , in Italian Leone XI ). " Undosus vir " in the Prophecy of Saint Malachie.
It was born in the powerful family from the Médicis. His/her mother, Francesca Salviati, was the niece of the pope Leon X. After orderbeing ordered priest, it was named by Cosme I {{er}} of Tuscany ambassador near Pie V. In 1573, it was devoted bishop, then named cardinal in 1583.
In 1596, Clément VIII named it apostolic Légat with Paris. There, it helped with the reconcilation of the Huguenot Henri IV of France, which had married Marie de Médicis, with the Catholic church. One also knows that it was in Chablais, thus meeting François de Sales.
With the Conclave of 1605, it appeared from the start like a candidate. Philippe III of Spain made known its dissatisfaction, but Henri IV brought a financial support of 300.000 ecus to the cause of his/her relative per alliance. The Italian party, carried out by the cardinal Aldobrandini, ends up joining the French party, and the cardinal Alexandre de Médicis was elected. Little time after its crowning, Leon XI fell sick and died after a Pontificat 27 days.
