Leon II , born in Sicily with an unknown date, dead the July 3rd 683 with Rome, was pope of 682 with 683.

Wire of a certain Paul, he studies in Scola cantorum Rome. With died of Agathon the January 10th 681, it is elected pope, undoubtedly with the current of January. However, the emperor Constantin IV refuses to recognize the election and asks, in exchange, for the judgment of the pope Honorius I {{er}}, regarded as partisan of the Monothélisme to the III {{E}} council of Constantinople which is held then.

The negociations continue until in 683. Constantin obtains the judgment of fire pope and in exchange, grants to Leon II, inter alia:

  • recognition of the pontifical election;

  • the presence of a permanent Apocrisiaire of the pope with Constantinople;
  • the transfer to Rome of the monothelists condemned by the council, to be judged by papacy there;
  • recognition of the supremacy of the pope on the exerche of Ravenne;
  • reduction in the payments of the Sicily and the Calabria to the imperial Treasury.

The body rests with the Basilique Saint-Pierre. He is regarded as saint and its worship is attested as of martyrologes of Bède Worthy the and Adon. He is celebrated the June 28th.
