Leon Gautier
Emile Theodore Leon Gautier , known under the name of Leon Gautier (born the August 8th 1832 with the Harbor - died the August 25th 1897 with Paris) was a writer, Philologue, historian of the literature and Archiviste paleographer French of the 19th century, which was professor with the École of the charters of 1866 with 1897.
Biography
Leon Gautier made his studies with the École of the charters of 1852 with 1855 and was named, at his exit of the school, archivist of the department of the Haute-Marne (1856). Ten years later, it became preserving imperial Archives (1866) with Paris. In 1871, it was named professor of Paléographie at the School of the charters. It continued its teaching there during more than twenty-five years, until its death in 1897.
Its scientific work was devoted to the history of the epic Poésie of the Middle Ages in France, to the Chevalerie and the Paléographie. He is in particular the author of an edition of the Chanson of Roland (text criticizes), become traditional (1872). He wrote many articles on the literature, his history and his polemics in various newspapers and reviews.
He was elected member of the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities in 1887 and became historical section head of the Public records in 1893.
