Leon Bonnat

Leon Joseph Florentin Bonnat , born with Bayonne the June 20th 1833 and died in Monchy-Saint-Éloi the September 8th 1922, is a academic painter and French portraitist.
Biography
Between 1846 and 1853, it lives with Madrid where his/her father is bookseller and where it studies painting near Jose de Madrazo there Agudo and of Federico de Madrazo there Küntz. Of return to Paris in 1854, he becomes the pupil of Leon Cogniet with the École of the Art schools. Its Résurrection of Lazare is worth a second to him Prix of Rome in 1857. Forsaking the historical and religious subjects following a voyage in Italy at the end of the Years 1860, then in Greece and with the the Middle East at the end of the Years 1870, it paints scenes of kind and is devoted more particularly to the Portrait. One owes him thus approximately 200 portraits, among which those of Louis Pasteur, Alexandre Dumas wire, Victor Hugo, Dominique Ingres, Hippolyte Taine and, among the official portraits, of Jules Ferry, Armand Fallières, Adolphe Thiers, Emile Loubet. He is also the author of the martyrdom of saint Denis to the the Pantheon of Paris.He is named professor at the School of the Art schools in 1880 and, the following year, he is elected member of the Académie of the Art schools. He is made knight of the Order of Merit in 1915. He bequeaths after his death his personal collection to the museum which bears now its name to Bayonne.
Leon Bonnat had in particular as pupils Georges Braque, Gustave Caillebotte, Raoul Dufy, Thomas Eakins, Stanhope Alexander Forbes, Othon Friesz, Charles Laval, Raimond Lecourt, Adolphe-Frederic Lejeune, Auguste Leroux, Alphonse Osbert, Pierre-Gaston Rigaud, Henry Siddons Mowbray, Henri of Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustav Wentzel, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Side and Henri-Achilles Zo.
