Leon Bakst

Lev Semuilovitch Rosenberg known as Leon (Nikolaievitch) Bakst , born with Grodno (Bielorussia) the April 27th 1866 and died in Paris the December 27th 1924, is a painter, Décorateur and Russian Costumier .

He studies painting with the Academy of the Art schools of Saint-Pétersbourg. In 1891, he travels to Italy, Germany and France where he binds with Alexandre Benois and his/her friends. He works in Paris between 1893 and 1899.

In 1898 it is one of the founders with Diaghilev, of the Le Monde movement of Article It takes part in very many newspapers in Russia, ( Le Monde of Art, artistic Trésors of Russia, Apollon, Zolotoe Runo, Satyricon , etc). There also draw postcards remained famous.

Bakst becomes, as of their birth, the privileged collaborator of the Russian Ballets, for which it carries out the decorations and the costumes between 1909 and 1921. Among his most outstanding achievements, one counts Schéhérazade , Daphnis and Chloé , the Waltz , the Spectrum of the pink or the Afternoon of a fauna .

It paints also many landscapes and portraits of artists of the world of the letters and arts of which Ivan Bounine, Vaslav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova, Blaise Cendrars, Claude Debussy, Jean Cocteau, Alexandre Benois or Michel Fokine.

Itself was the object of portraits of Modigliani or Picasso.

Its most famous pupil is Marc Chagall.

Since 1901, date on which it created its first decoration and during twenty-three years, until its death, Bakst upset the theater world with its passion for the believed colors, the audacity of its forms and the madness of its decorations. Initially known for its costumes impregnated D ¹ Eastern influences, its contribution essential with the art of the theater is to have proposed the role of the decorator.

It is buried with the cemetery of Batignolles.
