Leon Augustin Lhermitte

Leon Augustin Lhermitte was born on July 31st 1844 with Mount-Saint-Father small village from the Omois in the south from the Aisne. His/her father, teacher, notice his capacities with the drawing and his taste for painting. He encourages it in this field and allows him to make its studies with the fine arts or its talent is quickly noticed. Thanks to its work, it receives a purse and can continue its formation or it receives the teaching of large Masters.

Its finished formation, it often exposes and its tables are appreciated, it will receive several rewards for the quality of its works. During its life, it will help of many young people artists in their research. It will take part like jury in the World Fair of Paris in 1900.

After its death, on July 28th 1925 at the 81 years age, its work will fall little by little into the lapse of memory in spite of the presence from many tables in several galleries and museums from the whole world.

If you pass to Mount-Saint-Father you will be able to see on the place of the village the statue who is devoted to him.

Its techniques : Leon Augustin Lhermitte was a follower of the naturalism such as Cazin, Roll. Its works are very representative of the working and country social life of its time with heavy scenes of work. He often worked in his workshop after having memorized the scene to be represented which he had seen at the time of his walks. He paid an special attention in the light of his tables and had a great concern of the detail. He used mainly the charcoal for his drawings, the oil-base paint and the pastels for his fabrics.
