Leon-Paul Fargue
Leon-Paul Fargue (March 4th 1876, Paris - November 24th 1947, Paris), Poet French.
Wire naturalness of a Engineer resulting from the central School and of a modest dressmaker, Fargue was recognized by his/her father only very tardily. This circumstance influenced its existence notably, and could be at the origin of its chronic melancholy and its exacerbated sensitivity.
After brilliant secondary studies, during which it had prestigious professors (Mallarmé in particular), Fargue enters in Khâgne to the Lycée Henri-Iv, at the same moment as Alfred Jarry. It disappoints waitings of its family, which wanted it normalien, to choose idleness: sensitive to the Painting or the Piano, it is impassioned by the Poésie.
It is introduced quickly into the literary living rooms, in particular at “Tuesday” of Mallarmé thanks to Régnier, where it meets the intellectual and artistic elite beginning of the century, Valéry, Schwob, Claudel but also Debussy or Gide. He was member of the Société of Apaches and bound friendship with Maurice Ravel which put later in music its poem Rêves (1929).
He founds with Larbaud and Valéry the review Commerce .
After some poems published in 1894, Fargue gives Tancrède in 1895 (incipit: It was several times an young man so beautiful that the women expressly wanted that it wrote) , then Poèmes in 1912 and For the music in 1914.
Fargue is generally expressed in verse free, even in prose, in a language full with tenderness and sadness, on simple subjects, sometimes cocasses (one sometimes compared it to the photographer Robert Doisneau), more rarely absolutely oneiric (see Vulturne in 1928 however). Parisian in love with its city ( According to Paris , 1932; the Pedestrian of Paris , 1939), it writes also oppressive and drowned loneliness Nuit and of alcohol ( High loneliness , 1941). Fargue was also a étincelant chronicler of the Parisian company ( Refuges , Déjeuners of sun , 1942, or the magic lantern 1944). It is struck of Hémiplégie in 1943 and dies in 1947 with Montparnasse, in the residence of his wife, the painter Chériane, without to have ceased writing however. He was member of the Mallarmé Academy since 1937.
