Leon-Etienne Duval

Leon-Etienne Duval , born on November 9th, 1903 with Chenex and dead on May 30th, 1996 with Algiers, was man of the church, bishop, then archbishop and cardinal.

Biography

It was ordered priest with Annecy in 1926 after studies in Rome.

In 1947, the pope indicated it bishop of Constantine and Bône. A few months before the release of the War of Algeria in March 1954, Mgr Duval is transferred to the Archidiocèse from Algiers.

In 1956, he decides in favor of the self-determination of the populations of Algeria, which is worth to him the nickname of “Mohamed Duval” by the European population.

He was created Cardinal by Paul VI in 1965 in the tread of Independence. It receipt, without it to have requested, Algerian nationality in 1966 like a homage of the persons in charge of the State.

Jean-Paul II accepted his retirement in 1988.

It was buried in the Basilique Notre-Dame of Africa.
