Leon-Arthur Elchinger
Leon-Arthur Elchinger (July 2nd 1908, Soufflenheim - June 30th 1998 Strasbourg) was the 102e bishop of Strasbourg of 1967 with 1984. It took part between 1962 and 1965 with the Concile Vatican II, its interventions concerning the request for rehabilitation of Galileo and the oecumenism there were very noticed.
Biography
Born in a middle-class family, it made her schooling with Haguenau and with Nancy then studied catholic theology in Strasbourg and Rome where it was ordered priest on April 4th, 1931. It passed a license arts and a doctorate in theology and philosophy philosophy scholastic. Its finished formation, he became professor with the seminar of Strasbourg and as from 1937 also military chaplain. During the evacuation of 1939, the seminar was transferred to Clermont-Ferrand at the same time as the university and it remained there until the end of the war, in 1945. After namebeing named responsible for the school businesses in the administration of the diocese, it was named in 1947 honorary canon and finally, on request of the bishop Jean-Julien Weber, bishop-coadjutor with death tax. January 16th, 1958 it was devoted auxiliary bishop and titular bishop of Antandrus. Because of his major knowledge of the German culture and French culture, the cardinal Achille Liénart named it in 1962 bishop in charge of the connection between the Episcopal conferences Frenchwoman and allemande. He was there especially associated with work with the ecumenical IIe council with the Vatican. December 30th, 1966 it dealt with the seat of its predecessor. October 20th, 1984 he resigned his station. In the retirement, it published much and spoke regularly in the media about the questions about our time.Its French origins and allemandes pushed it to recognize the European dimension of the political decisions and theological. Continuously in the search of God close to the man it was filled by a “holy agitation” and a need to act which were not always correctly recognized and were not appreciated. It was extremely engaged in the oecumenism.

- 1931 : Ordered priest in April in Strasbourg, then appointed professor and director with the great seminar of Strasbourg
- 1938: Military chaplain in Strasbourg
- 1941: Named higher of the great seminar of Strasbourg folded up than Clermont-Ferrand
- 1945: Appointed directing diocesan of the teaching and catholic works of students in Strasbourg
- 1947: honorary fact Canon of the Cathedral of Strasbourg
- 1958: named bishop and coadjutor of M {{gr.}} Weber
- 1962 - 1965: take part in the Concile Vatican II meeting Jean XXIII thus, Paul VI and the future Jean-Paul II. Its interventions were very noticed at the time: they related to in particular the request for rehabilitation of Galileo and the oecumenism.
- 1967 : succeed M {{gr.}} Weber as Evêque of Strasbourg
- 1984: resign of its load of bishop of Strasbourg, it was replaced by Mgr Charles-Amarin Brand, bishop auxiliary since 1976
- 1984 - 1998: Credit after its retirement, it published several works and intervened regularly in the media. He dies three days before his 90 years.
