Leo Weisgerber

(Johannes) Leo Weisgerber (February 25th, 1899, Metz - August 8th, 1985, Bonn) was a German Linguiste born in Lorraine specialized in the Linguistique of the Celtic languages.

He taught like Professor with the Université of Rostock (1927-), with the Université of Marbourg (1938-), with the Université of Bonn (1942-).

From the study of the translations and difficulties encountered in this work, it contributes in particular to the theory of the sprachliche Zwischenwelt , according to which the language structure our apprehension of reality. Each speech community has its own perception of the world, different from that of the other groups:

  • There are terms or expressions which are specific to each speech community.
  • Certains concepts can be common to two (or more) speech communities and to have however a different connotation for each one of them.
  • Each speech community structure reality in a different way, according to its own linguistic codes.

During the war, it directs the station Rennes Brittany which diffuses the first radio transmissions into Breton.
