Giverny is a common department of the the Eure, in the area High-Normandy. Givernois reside there.
Geography
Located at approximately 5 km in the east of Vernon to the Confluent of the the Seine and the Epte.
History
Giverny is a Celtic name of origin. The parish was founded under the Mérovingiens and the church placed under the term of holy Radegonde.In 863 the king Charles II the Bald person recognized with the monks of the abbey of Saint-Denis-the-Close the possession of Giverny.
At the 11th century, the stronghold and the church of Giverny returned to the abbey of Ouen Saint to Rouen. With the the Middle Ages, several lords succéfèrent themselves but they remained always the vassal ones of the prior of Ouen Saint.
There then existed several monasteries, one of them was located at the site of the house known as Moûtier , while the property known as Dîme owes its name with a barn dîmière which was used as place of perception of the tax until the Révolution. Indeed, the tenth of all the agricultural productions returned to the Rouennaise abbey.
There was also a leper-house.
With the Revolution, it is the family Lorier which had the grounds of Giverny. Mr Lorier was besides the first mayor of the village in 1791.
More recently:
- 1883 : Claude Monet settles in the village. It there died in 1926 and is buried in the cemetery which is next to the church.
- June 30th 1996: Hillary Clinton comes to inaugurate the Museum of American Art.
