Lemminkäinen continuation

The legends of Lemminkäinen , COp 22, are a whole of four symphonic parts written by Jean Sibelius between 1893 and 1895.

They are inspired by the Kalevala, cycle mythical Finnish, describing the adventures of a " Don Juan " Scandinavian.

The first part is Lemminkäinen and the young girls of the island , inspired of songs XI and XXIX of Kalevala: the hero takes refuge in an island, comprising many young girls, to have killed the sovereign of a nearby kingdom shortly after.

The second part, most known, is the swan of Tuonela , inspired by song XIV. It was initially the third part of the cycle before the musician does not invert these two last at the end of the Forties. Tuonela is the kingdom of deaths, surrounded by a black river on which stroke a swan of the same color. The Cor anglais, symbolizing the funeral animal, is omnipresent.

The third part is Lemminkäinen and Tuonela , inspired by song XV: the hero was killed and his/her mother comes to seek her skin in the river bordering the kingdom of died and the ressuscite.

The last part is the return of Lemminkäinen , inspired by songs XXIX and XXX: the hero returns at his place. This part was deeply altered and in particular curtailed in 1896 compared to its initial version,

The creation of the first version took place the April 13rd 1896 with Helsinki under the direction of the musician. Because of criticism, the first and third parts were not given any more before being reinstated in the cycle in 1935.

The total execution of the cycle lasts approximately fifty minutes.
