Lelystad

Lelystad is the chief town of the province Dutchwoman of the Flevoland. The city counts 70.880 inhabitants (June 1st 2005) .

Lelystad is in edge of the inland seas IJsselmeer and Markermeer. There the dam Houtribdijk begins which separates these two stretch of water and which joined Enkhuizen.

History

Lelystad was founded in 1967. The city was named according to Dr. Cornelis Lely, the initiator of the stoppings of the Zuiderzee ( Zuiderzeewerken ).

Lelystad, like the entirety of the Flevoland, was built on a Polder, i.e. on ground gained on the sea, and it is at an altitude of 5 m under the sea level. The area was only drained in 1957.

  • Near the city is important natural reserve Oostvaardersplassen.

  • On the airport of Lelystad is the museum of aeronautics " Aviodrome ", in which one can see the last Douglas DC-2 in-flight status in the world.
