Lejre

Lejre is a small town of the Denmark, in the center of the island of Sjælland.

Geography

Located at the east of the Denmark, in the center of the island of Sjælland, Lejre covers 88,17 km ² for a population of 8.615 inhabitants (January 1st, 2004) .

Lejre , Northern Latitude 55,6048° and Longitude 11,9588° Is, is with ten kilometers in the south-west of Roskilde, which is the prefecture of the department of Roskilde amt.

Lejre is a rather rural municipality.

Lejre is a municipality which makes party of Roskilde amt (department).

It has its clean railway station, with a single line which connect it to Roskilde in the North-East, and with Hvalsø in the west. The complete name (seldom used) of Danish Lejre is Lejre stationsby which refers to the fact that there is a station.

History

Besides Lejre was an important pole of the time of the Viking S. One finds in this municipality of the tumulus old kings (half sphere of ground of several meters in height, with a hollow heart being used as burial).
