Leibulf of Provence

Leibulf of Provence (? - ap.829 or 835)

Biography

The origins of Leibulf are not known, although according to any probability it was born in Provence where it had, ex rebus proprietas , a franc-freehold around Arles. Its rise with the capacity dates from the last years of the reign of Charlemagne (768814) which grants many its titles to him. Probable successor of the Count Loup, Leibulf , also called Leibulfe , Leybulf or Letibulf , is count de Provence in the first years of the 9th century.

Leibulf led with Berà and the count de Gascogne, Sanche Wolf Ier, a quota of Provençaux during the forwarding of Louis the Piles against Barcelona in 800/801.

Leibulf is convened in 812 at the court of Aachen with the counts Berà of Barcelona, Gaucelme of the Roussillon, Odilón of Gérone and Besalú, Giscafred of Carcassonne, Ermenguer of Ampurias, Adhemar of Narbonne and Erlín of Béziers. A group of Hispanic landowners (i.e., noble buildings of the old province of Septimanie and Gothie or Hispanic Walk) carried felt sorry for against all these counts. These owners complain about what one imposes to them on their grounds of the tributes and the unjust loads. Charlemagne gives reason to the plaintiffs.

As of the end of the reign of Charlemagne, it seems that Leibulf sees its capacity to overflow on part of the Septimanie.

At all events, in March 817, it receives this county following the reorganization of the Carolingian capacity in the south of France and the steps of Spain. With Gaucelme, marquis of Ampurias-Roussillon and Berà, count de Barcelone in Catalonia, it is one of the three larger characters of the south of the Kingdom at the beginning of the reign of Louis the Piles, at the time where the emperor the government of this territory reorganizes.

In 824, a charter dated November 7th mentions an exchange of grounds with Noton, the archbishop of Arles. Another exchange (or the confirmation of the precedent) is mentioned on January 3rd 825. Leibulf is a benefactor of the monastery of Lérins. Its death occurs after March 16th 829, date of its last donation to this monastery and Bernard de Septimanie receives his honor . Perhaps he until the years saw 835, when to fight against the pirates the emperor Louis the Piles gathers the whole of the provençaux counties under the authority of a duke residing at Arles, certainly Leibulf.

The duke Guerin probably succeeds to him in Provence. He leaves a woman called Oda, also bienfaitrice of Lérins.
