The legong is a kind of Danse Bali are born which, according to the tradition, represents the celestial ballet of divine nymphs.

In the Balinese ballet dancing, the legong is regarded as expressing the quintessence of femininity and the grace. The dancers carry luxurious gilded costumes and hairstyles furnished with flowers, and handle sometimes a range. They are accompanied by a music carried out by a Gamelan.

The legong obeys very precise rules which impose precise gestures and determine the movement of the face, the position of the hands and the fingers.

As of the 5 years age, the little girls of Bali dream to be selected to represent their village as dancers of legong . In general, they stop dancing it at the 14 years age.

Most known of the legong is the " Legong Kraton" or legong of palate. It thus is called because formerly, it was carried out in the puri (palate) in the presence of the princes. Three dancers take part in it: the condong , following of the court, and two dancers with the identical costume representing of the people of royal row.

The argument is drawn from a tale which proceeds in the Java 12th century. The king of Lasem meets a Rangkesari young lady who lost herself in the forest. He brings back it at his place and locks up it in a stone residence. The brother of Rangkesari, the prince of Daha, learns that his/her sister is in captivity and Lasem threat of war if it is not released. Rangkesari begs its kidnapper to release it to avoid the war. But the king prefers to fight. On the way for the battle, it meets a bird of ill omen which predicts its death to him. The king is killed in the combat which follows.
