Geography
Legnano is in Western Lombardy in the Alto Milanese to 25 km in the North-West of Milan, in the Plaine of Po. The city is crossed by the
Olona.
History
During the
Battle of Legnano, on May 29th, 1176, the troops of the lombardes cities inflict a heavy defeat with the imperial troops of Frederic Ier. With this victory, Lombardy succeeds in guaranteeing its autonomy compared to the Saint Germanic Roman Empire. Giuseppe Verdi composed an opera
the battaglia di Legnano (1849) reporting this event.
Legnano was decorated with the Military Bronze medal for the War of Resistance for the sacrifices of the population and the fight of the partisans during the second world war.
Economy
Legnano developed at the end of the 19th century at the time of the
Industrial revolution by the establishment of many textile industries and metallurgical. After the crisis of the industry of the Seventies, Legnano turned to the tertiary sector activities. This reconversion continues: the buildings of the old textile factory
Cantoni must be destroyed to leave the place at an important shopping mall and a residential complex.
