Legislative elections of 2007 in Basse-Normandie

The Basse-Normandie traditionally was a stronghold of center-right, and in particular of the UDF in the Calvados, the district council rocking on the left only during the “vague pink” of the regional of 2004. Thus, the three general advices, the regional prefecture and main city of the Area (Caen), the two other departmental prefectures (Saint-Lo and Alençon) and all the sub-prefectures, except for Nickel silver in the Flowering ash and of Cherbourg-Octeville in the Handle, are directed by the line. Moreover, at the time of the 12th legislature, all the deputies of the area were of right-hand side (including two UDF in the Calvados) and it has one Socialist senator there (in the Manche). But at the time of the 11th legislature of 1997 - 2002, however dominated by a left majority, it had one socialist deputy there on five in the Manche and none in the Orne, and although in the Calvados on the other hand five of the six deputies were socialist.

At the time of the presidential election of 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy obtained in the area 30,84% of the votes, in front of the 22,99% of Ségolène Royal and the 20,23% of Francois Bayrou, and with the second turn the candidate of the UMP beat his socialist adversary with 54,21% against 45,79%, scores particularly high in the Manche (56,17% for Sarkozy) and the Orne (57,66%). In the Calvados on the other hand the score was tightened more, with 51,18% for Nicolas Sarkozy and 48,82% for Ségolène Royal, primarily owing to the fact that Caen, like much of other medium-sized cities, then voted in important a enough way for the Socialist (arrived at the head at the turn with 31,28% then Sarkozy leaf to the second turn with 55,6% against 44,4%). Thus, if the legislative ones forecast only few surprised in the Manche or the Orne, the Calvados could be there more disputed and new the democratic Mouvement of Francois Bayrou has chances to make there an opening and the Socialists can maintain balance there, the more so as Philippe Duron, the “ladykiller” of the majority from the right at the district council in 2004, was personally implied while standing as a candidate in the 1st district (which it had held of 1997 with 2002).
