The Auvergne, old political stronghold of Valery Giscard d'Estaing, is an area shared between rural areas rather established on the right and an agglomeration, Clermont-Ferrand, traditionally anchored on the left.

The most urban district of Puy de Dôme knows a very active campaign. Among the many candidates, several very known and very established personalities clash, breaking the binary character of the confrontation in the majority of the district.The debate on the incinerator animates particularly this countryside, the candidates being major actors of the file. The candidature of a dissenting Socialist vis-a-vis the outgoing deputy forms also part of the major points of this electoral campaign. The former section secretary of the district of Cross of Neyrat wants to play of his establishment in the popular quarters.

Twelve candidates clash in this district. The duel opposes especially the outgoing deputy, Alain Néri, with Doctor Paul Suss. This last campaign is made difficult by its health issues. Several city council men and assistant are also candidates. Following the example Claire Joyeux, associated with Cournon of Auvergne, or Marie-Christine Petit Belouin, municipal adviser of Bridge-of-Castle.

Vis-a-vis the outgoing deputy, two socialist candidates clash. Alain Brochet, who did not obtain the socialist investiture, put itself on leave of his party to be able to maintain his candidature. During the program, the mayor of Ceyrat received - with the general surprise - the support of Dominique Turpin, however of right-hand side, the political adversary of Louis Giscard d'Estaing and unfortunate candidate with the conquest of the Town hall of Chamalières vis-a-vis this last following the death of Claude Wolf.

The district of Livradois-Drill offer a second mandate with the outgoing deputy, André Chassaigne. The results are marked by scores important for the Communist candidate. At the 1° turn, it arrives largely at the head and gains without difficulty the " primaire" of left. The socialist candidate, Thiernoise Martine Munoz, sorrow to exceed the 10% of the voices. With the second turn, Andre Chassaigne plank 66%. One deduces quickly from his score which its votes gathered much more than the left voters.
