Legio II Augusta

The Legio II Augusta is a Roman Légion.

The origin of this legion goes back to César. It took part in the civil war between Marc Antoine and Auguste (Bataille of Actium). Reconstituted by Auguste, the legion appears in Spain in the year 30 av. J. - C. It will remain in Spain of 29 with 19 av. J. - C. One finds it in 16 a. J. - C. with Argentorate (Strasbourg) in the device safety against the German ones. It took part then in the countryside of Claude in Great Britain (43) under the orders of Aulus Plautius and the future emperor Vespasien. Towards 47, elements are installed in Abonae (Sea Mills, Bristol, England). In 49/50, it subjects the tribe of Dobunni and seizes their capital Corinium (Cirencester, England). The legion will be then confined in Isca Dumninio (Exeter) in 56/57. In 66/67, the legion settles in the fortress of Glevum (Gloucester, England). It will remain then from 122 to 418 in Rutupiac (Richborough, England).
