Legend off the Five Boxing rings (L 5R)) is a card deck to be collected creates by the company AEG , Alderac Entertainment Group, based in California, in 1995. Inspired of the roleplay named Bushido, L 5R takes seat, according to the legend, in the area of Rokugan, an imaginary country pointing out feudal Japan, with influences of the other cultures of the Asian East, or the samurais and the shugenja (magicians) of various clans, fight to dominate the others.

Since 2002, it is translated into French, and since 2004 also in Spanish and German. Only the charts were translated, the play keeps its original English name. France is, after the United States, the country in which the community is most active. Let us quote in particular Paris, but also Lyon, Lille, Toulouse, Poitiers or Strasbourg, like important poles of play.

This card deck is similar to Magic: The Gathering but has a single mechanism of play and elements which distinguishes it from its prestigious predecessor. Thus there exist passive conditions of victory, like Enlightenment Victory, which is opposed to the goal of magic, which is to destroy its adversary (its points of life, or its bookstore). The parts are often very long, and a simple match little sometimes to last of the hours.

In 1997, Legend off Five Boxing rings: Battle off Beiden Pass gained off Origins Award for Best Card Game 1996. In 1998, Legend off the Five Boxing rings: Time off the Void gained off Best Card Game Expansion gold Supplement 1997.

A roleplay is drawn from this card deck: the Book of the five rings.

Universe of the play

Five Legend off the boxing rings (L 5R)) is held in a fantastic universe medieval inspired of the medieval Japan, in which mix Samurai S, code of honor, Japanese philosophy ( CAT of Shinsei ) and shugenjas (elementary magicians).

It was created by several authors, of which mainly John Wick in 1995. The name is drawn from the title of a famous book of strategy in Japan, the Livre of the five rings or the Treaty of the five wheels ( Gorin No sho ) of the Samurai Musashi Miyamoto (1643).

The single characteristic of this universe is that it initially appeared within the framework of the card deck, before becoming, three years later, a roleplay.

The world of L 5R names Rokugan . It is an empire whose birth is described in the imaginary mythology of the play by the episode of the fall of the Kami . Since then, the Kami Hantei founded a line of emperors and distributed the kingdom to his/her brothers and sisters who founded each one a clan. One finds the clans of the Licorne, of the Lion, the Crabe, the Grue, the Phoenix, the Scorpion, and the Dragon. Other clans will emerge later in the history. Lastly, one of the brothers of Hantei , Fu Leng , moved away from the phratry and became the lord of the Outremonde , kingdom of malefic creatures wanting to destroy the empire.

Play

The play L 5R proposes with its players to represent a clan. The player must compose two packages (decks) of 40 charts minimum each one: the package of dynasty and the package of intended . The package of dynasty represents the state of your clan, one finds there mainly characters and resources ; the package of destiny allows to act on the play, with charts action , leaves , according to , object… Moreover, the player must choose a fortress : each faction has several different fortresses, and the choice of the fortress will influence clearly the orientation of the play.

L 5R proposes indeed various types of victories, it is even one of its principal characteristics. The principal ones are the military victory (where mainly destroying combatants and effects are used), the victory with the honor (often obtained with courtiers and political actions), the victory with the rings or the illumination (monks and effects mystical) and the victory by dishonouring its adversary (political game also, but with negative effects for the adversary rather than positive for oneself). There exist also specific series of charts being able to create other conditions of victories, but they remain marginal.

During a part, the players bring into play resources to enlist units, which they can equip with objects, following, or magic spells. These units can be sent to the attack of the unfavourable provinces, with an aim of destroying them (military victory), but also of carrying out other actions of political nature for example, like requiring the favor of the emperor, or defying in duel of iaijutsu (art of the saber) an unfavourable unit. The system of play is very flexible and makes it possible to achieve a multitude of different actions.

Characteristics

One of the characteristic of the play, which is worth to him to have such a good longevity in the world of the plays to collect, is to be based on an imaginary history ( storyline ) very rich. The various narrators of the play, Ree Soesbee, Rich Wulf and Shawn Carman, developed a prolific history illustrating each new extension, and each character represented in chart has his own history. Each chart of the play is also supplied with a small quotation ( flavor text ) which contributes to excavate still a little more the personality of this play.

The other major aspect of the storyline which became extensive with the wire of time is its interactivity with the players. With each new edition, the players have the possibility, via tournaments or of votes, to put forward their opinions on the history of the play and to a certain extent, to influence it. Thus, each event equipped with a price storyline makes it possible to its winner to leave his print in the history of the play, which creates an additional enthusiasm around L 5R.

L 5R goes hand in hand with its tournaments. In these events, which become quickly of true conventions being able to gather more than 200 people over a whole weekend, the players disguise themselves with the colors of the clan which they defend, and a true process of identification is offered to the player. The majority of the participants in such events are identified by a name rokugani , such as Togashi Inokenezashi or Iuchi Yoshiko , supposed to reflect the membership of a family of the empire. Parallel events, such as contests of origami, ceremonies of the or demonstrations of martial arts are regularly organized in parallel of these tournaments, to complete the atmosphere with Asian consonance of these events.

L 5R counts today more than 4.000 different charts and nearly 50 extensions. A new basic edition leaves every two years to the autumn, and of the promotional extensions and sets leaving during these two years create the format play. The period 2005-2007 was that of the edition, and the format, Lotus.

In July 2007 left the Samurai edition, bases format of the same name. The two last extensions of the format Lotus, the Litmus test and the Challenge of Khan, are also included in the format Samurai, as well as part of the deck promotional Tomorrow.
