Belgium is divided into 10 provinces, which themselves are divided into districts which them is finally subdivided in cantons. The canton is a regrouping of several communes on criteria of proximity and population which constitutes the spring of the jurisdiction ratione loci of a Justice of the Peace. The big cities have several cantons (Mons 1, Mons 2…).

The legal Code defines in its appendices the exact territory of the cantons. It is curious to notice that to adopt the structure of the country from the point of view arises territorial, the legislator left bottom to the top thus of the canton to the spring of Court of Appeal and not the top downwards as it is current to proceed during a description. This is a parallel with the national anthem, Brabançonne : the words end in the King, the Law, Freedom in accordance with the provision of the titles of the first Constitution. But nowadays, the Constitution of 1994 fact initially of intervening freedoms, then the law and finally the King.
