Leet speak

The Leet speak or 1337 5p34k , of English elite speak (litt. language of the elite), is a writing using the characters Alphanumérique S ASCII in a not very comprehensible way for the neophyte (called Noob and variations) to dissociate itself some. The 1337 5p34k can be written several manners, all use characters graphically close to the usual characters, for example 5 instead of S, 7 instead of T and for the extremists |_| instead of U or |< instead of K. Of course the orthography or the respect of the capital letters is to be banished, the creativity is on the other hand of rigor.

This language finds at some Geek S, Hacker S, users of network games, demosceners and hackers, but generally concerns young people of them.

Origin

The alphabet 1337 was born with the end from the Années 1980 on BBS underground from a mixture from technical terms in telephony and data processing.

The first utility was for the initiates ( elite ) to prevent the quidam (Lamer) from reaching the sensitive files concerning telephone piracy (Phreaking) and data processing (malevolent Hacking, cracking).

Another origin of word 1337 (and 31337) comes from a group of crackers having published a exploit for Windows 95 which used the port 31337. It is this act which truly created the “1337 speak”.

Grammar

Use of the $

The $, which can, in a current sentence leet, being compared to a S , the original use were slightly different. Indeed, the 5 was employed for the letter S in a banal context while the $ were used in a sentence ironic or insulting, with sometimes a connotation as for the bad side of the money. For example, one will prefer “r0xx0r5” with “r0xx0r$” and “m|cr0$0f7” with “m|cr050f7”.

A language on several levels

The leet speak is a language on several levels, i.e. there are several ways of coding a text in leet. That comes owing to the fact that there exist several equivalents with the majority of the letters of the alphabet. One can have for example:
  • L33T 5P3AK in basic coding;
  • 1337 5p34k in light coding;
  • £33 ‡ šρ3@ķ in average coding;
  • |_ 33¯|¯ _\¯|°3/- \|< in high coding.
In a text, several codings can overlap, thus increasing the difficulty of reading of the text for the neophytes. However certain purists think that only the figures can be used.

Current use

Today the leet or 1337 is not used any more by the community hacker. The leet is found mainly on the blogs and the pseudo ones of gamers, according to the communities.

The leet is also used by some spammeurs to circumvent measurements of filterings, for example: V14GR4, recognized immediately by the human reading but not by certain filters which do not know this word and thus lets it pass.

Moreover, the leet is used today by many people like technique of encryption of password, making it possible to use words of the dictionary without being sensitive to the attacks of the type Attaque by dictionary.
