Leeds Carnegie (in the past Leeds Tykes ) is a club of Rugby to XV English taking part in the Premiership and based with Leeds. It was founded in 1991 by the union of two clubs: Headingley and Roundhay.

History of the club

For Headingley , Rugby is an old tradition which goes back to 1877, when several young people were interested there after having seen Leeds St-Johns , today Leeds Rhinos. Their first match took place in November of the same year against team 2 of the Saints. In 1889, Headingley east dissolves when Leeds St-Johns moves in Headingley and built there a stage, the Headingley Stadium . However, Headingley rebounded out of Yorkshire, where she plays of the matches, in particular in 1901 against Blackheath.

Roundhay was founded in 1924 and moves in the enclosure of Chandos Park in the the Thirties. Nearly forty international the colors of one or other team carried: Peter Winterbottom, Ian McGeechan and Chris Rea for Headingley, Brian Moore for Roundhay.

It is thus into 1991 that Leeds RUFC was founded after the fusion of Roundhay and of Headingley . The first match of the team took place the first September 1992 against Hull Ionians . In 1996, the club joined Rhinos with Headingley Stadium to play there its matches and Phil Davies becomes the trainer-player about it.

In 1998, the club takes the name of Leeds Tykes and it amalgamates with Leeds Rhinos to give rise to a new entity which chapote two clubs. This transformation and evolution of the club are concretized in 2000-01 with the rise in Premiership.

The first season in Premiership is catastrophic since that the club finishes last and reléguable. Nevertheless Leeds saves its place because the first of the second division is seen refusing the accession. The season 2002-03 will be successful better with a fifth place with the Championship and a qualification for the Coupe of Europe.

In 2005, Tykes reach for the first time the finale of Coupe of England where they find Bath, unconquered finally of this competition. With the general surprise Leeds gains the Cut and brings back its first trophy. At the time of this same year they will have to fight until the ultimate day to be maintained in the elite.

In 2006, they finish last and are relegated. They gain the National Division 1 2006-2007 and they can thus find more the high level in 2007-2008.

The club of which bore the name of Leeds Tykes until the end of season 2006-2007 will call from now on Leeds Carnegie.
