Biography

Lee Morgan begins its career in the orchestra of Dizzy Gillespie with old 18 years. It remains there during two years. In 1956 it starts to record as a leader, mainly for the label Blue Note. It records nearly 25 albums for this label. Its principal influences are Clifford Brown and Dizzy Gillespie.

It appears also in varied album of Hank Mobley, John Coltrane ( Blue Train ), the Jazz Messengers of Art Blakey, Jimmy Smith, Wayne Shorter and Andrew Hill. It became famous thanks to its album: The Sidewinder in 1963. In its albums as a leader, he played with the largest musicians of Hard bop: Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson or Jackie MacLean with the saxophone; Bobby Tillers or McCoy Tyner with the piano; Art Blakey with the battery… Its style is very characteristic of its Blue Note the Sixties: a quintet in general made up of a trumpet, a saxophone tenor (more rarely viola or baritone), of a piano, a double bass and a battery; a sound funky, a style Drunk jazz. Under many aspects, Lee Morgan represents the type even of the musician hardware bop of the Sixties.

Lee Morgan was killed by its ex woman. The legend wants that, one evening in concert, Lee Morgan, following a dispute with its heroin supplier, required of its ex woman to bring back her gun to him. When it arrived, it found Lee Morgan in company of another woman. A dispute followed and Lee Morgan was killed by its ex woman.
