Lee Chang-dong (born on April 1st 1954 with Daegu, Korea) is a writer, scenario writer, realizer, producer and South Korean Politician .

A committed writer

Born with Daegu (center-is), Lee Chang-dong obtains its diploma of Korean language and literature to the Université Kyungbuk in this same city in 1980. At that time the South Korea lives under a military dictatorship, and it takes share with the demonstrations coeds against the mode. Always to Daegu, it is devoted to the theater, writing and assembling parts. After having taught Korean briefly with the college, it launches out in the writing with its first novel Chonri ( The Booty ) in 1983. It is placed in a polemical register which it will preserve in all its future works (thus Chonri “evokes the bloody riots of 1980 with Kwangju,). It becomes one of the authors most recognized in his country while continuing with Burning Papers (1987) and Nokcheon (1992).

Its entry in the medium of the cinema is done via Park Kwang-known (one of the scenario writers more for country, considered as the leader of the New Korean cinema) which proposes the writing of two scenarios to him: To the Starry Island (1993) and has Individual Park (1995).

Scenario writer on late

It is with surprised of much that it passes finally behind the camera in 1997 with Green Fish (of which he is also the scenario writer), a criticism of the South Korean company telling the unhealthy rise of an young man in the universe of the crime. This first test is a success and its film is present in several international festivals.

Its second film Peppermint Candy , in 1999 obtains even more success as much in Korea that with the international one. It puts once again forward the after-effects of the military dictatorship (still the massacre of Kwangju, torture in the police stations, the economic crisis of 1997…) by unrolling with wrong way over twenty years the life of a man who has just committed suicide.

Its third film Oasis , and its chief of work to date, devotes it definitively (nearly a million and half of entries in Korea). The atypical history describes the love between an young man delayed scapegoat and a physical handicapped person.

Transitory minister

At the end of February 2003, Lee Chang-dong was appointed Minister for the Culture of South Korea to the government of the president Roh Moo-hyun. Arrived at this station by surprised it had to face the imposition of quotas on the American productions, allowing a development of the local productions. It leaves its station since 2004, éreinté by this experiment and this foreign world with him.

In October 2005, he is the guest of Thierry Frémaux with the Institut Light.

In October 2006 it is made knight of the Légion of honor for “ its contribution to the maintenance of the quotas in order to promote cultural diversity as a Minister for the culture. ” the ceremony took place with the embassy of France in South Korea in the presence of the minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres.

In 2007, it presents its last film Secret Sunshine in official competition at the time of the Cannes festival, telling a history of love in an unclassable style between a piano teacher and a person in charge of a garage of cars.
