Carentan is a common French, located in the department of the Manche and the area Basse-Normandie.

Geography

History

Carentan is located in the middle of vast marshes cleansed and transformed into rich person meadows, with the confluence of the Taute and the Douve. The Capital of the Marshes , with the doors of the Peninsula of Cotentin and the Bay of Veys, is in the middle of the Regional natural park of the Marshes of Cotentin and Bessin.

Its key position in fact, with the liking of the various wars, a very disputed place. Named " Carentomagos" at the time Gallo-Roman, the city is often besieged and destroyed, during the invasions Normans and of the Franco-English wars. It is strengthened by Blanche of Castille, then dismantled in 1853.

Events

During the Second world war the June 12th 1944, the commune was the theater of violent one confrontations between American parachutists of the 101e and the German Fallschirmjäger, with for conclusion the catch of the city by the Americans. Certain rather old buildings of the city still carry the marks of the battle.

Places and monuments

A remarkable city for its historical heritage:
  • the church Notre-Dame : Romance church of the 11th century destroyed in 1443 and rebuilt in the Gothic style.

  • the Town hall : it dates from the 17th century/17th century. Old convent which was used in turn of barracks, college, garrison.
  • medieval Arcades : located place of the Republic, these arcades are single in Normandy. They are supposed to be the remainder of an old market hall.
  • the bridge channel : Opened the June 6th 1994. The bridge channel makes pass the Trunk road 13 to 2 X 2 ways (connecting Caen to Cherbourg) under the channel of Carentan to the sea on the port. An impressive building site which lasted 22 month mobilizing on average 70 people per day.

    • Concrete : 18.000 m3.
    • Steel : 1.741 tons.

  • the laundrette of the Fountains : 18th century.
  • the presbytery : 18th century, it had the honor to accommodate one Napoleon night 1st.
