League of the Rhine
The Ligue of the Rhine is a union of the German princes intended to weaken the positions of the Emperor of the Holy roman Empire, in the Années 1650.
The Treated of Westphalia of 1648, authorizes the German, vassal princes immediate of the Emperor, to conclude between them or with the foreigner from alliances.
The August 14th 1658, the princes Électeur S of Trier, Mainz, Cologne, the bishop of Münster, the Count Palatine of the Rhine, the duke of Bavaria, the landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, the duke of Brunswick, the duke of Luxembourg, the king of Sweden, form the League of the Rhine. They confederate and are combined with the France to maintain the clauses of the treaty of Westphalia. They are committed not letting pass in their States any troop intended to attack France in the Spanish Netherlands or in other places.
France is thus protected in the east by a " border militaire" supported on the the Rhine.
