The great league of Souabe , or league of the country of Souabe ( of Schwäbischer Bund ) was concluded the February 14th 1488, at the time of the Diète of Empire of Esslingen - on-Neckar with the permission of the emperor Frederic III between several princes of the south of Germany: carried out by the duke of the Tyrol and the count de Wurtemberg, several baronnies of less importance, like those of Werdenberg, Fürstenberg, Waldburg, Zollern etc, leagued with the knights like twenty towns of empire of the Souabe. The town of Ulm was elected like sits of the league. The league of Souabe was a big step in the reform of the administrative institutions of the Saint Empire Romain Germanique and the federalism, and was the proof of its effectiveness in the repression of the Guerre of the peasants.

Formation of the league

During the 15th century, the noble ones of Souabe engage a political struggle against the cities, encroach on their rights and create a situation which threatens to make sink the duchy in anarchy. The emperor Frederic III proposes to gather the cities and the nobility within the Great League of Souabe. This coalition, to which the emperor grants a constitution, counts four principal groups: the twenty-two cities of Souabe, the order of knighthood says league of Saint-Georges, the area directed by Sigismond, archduke of Austria, and that carried out by Eberhard VI of Wurtemberg, which becomes captain, or commander-in-chief, of the League.

The Great league of Souabe is a strong military power of more than 13  000 men.

Military interventions of the league

The league of Souabe took part in many military campaigns, which one can summarize as follows:
  • it took part in the Guerres of Souabe of 1499 and was demolished at the time of the engagements around Triesen, then lost the battles of Schwaderloh and Dornach.
  • At the time of the war of succession of Bavaria (1504-05), it victoriously took party for the duke of High-Bavaria, Albert IV and against the party of the palatine line of the duke Georges.
  • In 1512 the troops of the league took by storm the citadel of Hohenkrähe im Hegau to put a term at the separatism of the local minor nobility, and in 1519 it condemned the duke Ulrich of Wurtemberg, which had tried to seize by the force the free city Reutlingen.
  • In 1523 it was drawn up against the knighthood of Franconie carried out by Hans Thomas von Absberg.
  • the war of the peasants bursts in 1525 and the armies of the league go in 1526 against the rising of the peasants to Salzburg. The detail of the events is given hereafter.
