The league of Augsburg in 1686, is an alliance of most of Europe against France of Louis XIV then at the top of its power.
The Political of the Meetings (of 1678 to 1681), the French aggression against the Spanish Netherlands (1683-1684), the Bombardment of Genoa (1684) by the French, the support of Louis XIV for his sister-in-law, the Palatine Princess at the time of the succession of the Elector Palatine in 1685, worry the European princes. The policy anti-Protestant woman carried out with eagerness since 1676 and which leads to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, soda the face of the princes and the Protestant populations of Europe. Guillaume III of Orange which aims at the throne of England of his/her father-in-law Jacques II wishes to occupy Louis XIV on the continent.
In 1686, Holland and Sweden renew their defensive alliance. May 7th, 1686, the emperor and the voter of Brandebourg make some in the same way to defend the assets of the Traité of Westphalia. July 9th with Augsburg, in Bavaria, Guillaume III, the Emperor, Spain, Sweden, Bavaria, the dukes of Saxony, are combined against France. In September the Elector Palatine and the duke of Holstein-Gothorp join the league. In 1689, the league is reinforced by the alliance of the emperor with the United Provinces (treated of Vienna) to which unite the Denmark, the Savoy, the England of the new king Guillaume III and the Spain.
The failure of the attempt to impose to the pope the nomination of an archbishop pro-French to Cologne, leads to the military occupation of the city by the French (June 1688). It is the beginning of the Guerre of the league of Augsburg which lasts until 1697.
