The Ligue of the Polish families (Liga Polskich Rodzin, LPR ) is a Polish political party, nationalist, conservative and Eurosceptic, founded on May 30th 2001 by Roman Giertych. It forms part since 2004 parliamentary group Indépendance/Démocratie (IND/DEM) with the the European Parliament, with ten appointed.

As of 2001, it obtained 8% of the voices to the Sejm (Diet) Polish.

History

The leader of the LPR is Roman Giertych. His/her father, Maciej Giertych is a deputy of the same party. His/her grandfather was also a deputy of IIe République, before the Second world war, as a member of national Democracy (in Polish, Narodowa Demokracja, a party close to the interests of Russia tsarist. Graduate of the University Adam-Mickiewicz in Poznan, it started by working with Polish nationalist Democrats and some think that this party is affiliated with the father Tadeusz Rydzyk, director of the radio Catholique Radio Maryja, who gains a sharp success among the elderly, even if she is often criticized by the Polish catholic authorities. But in spite of their ideological proximity, it is allowed today that the LPR was not founded by Rydzyk, which took its distances with the LPR since its entry with the government. Shortly after the election of 2001, a scission caused the departure of a group of deputies to found another party, Porozumienie Polskie (Polish Circle) with as leader Jan Lopuszanski.

In 2001, the youth organization of nationalist inspiration Młodzież Wszechpolska ( the youth of eternal Poland ), created in 1922 then dissolved after the war, is refondée and associated with the League of the Polish families of which it represents officially the youth movement.

At the beginning of November 2002, the League conquers 800 of the 30.000 communes of Poland.

In June 2004, the LPR obtained 16% of the voices, which has enabled him to obtain 15 of the 54 Polish seats to the the European Parliament, the rate of abstention from this election reaching of the records among the ten new entrants.

September 25th, 2005, the League gains nearly 8% of the 40% of votes cast, and thus obtains 34 of the 460 seats to the Diète. The same day, it enters 7 of the 100 seats of the Senate.

At the time of the presidential election of 2005, on September 4th, Maciej Giertych gives up presenting itself to support Lech Kaczynski. This strategy will be worth criticisms on behalf of Młodzież Wszechpolska to him, however near to the League.

The 10 November 2005 the LPR voted confidence with the Diète with the preserving of the party Droit and justice to support the government of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz.

The May 5th 2006, the Polish government sees the entry in load of several ministers close to the extreme-right-hand side: Roman Giertych, directing League of the Polish families, is with the head of Education. This last account to reinforce in the school handbooks the feeling of value Christian women in Poland, but refuses however to integrate the cathechism like matter of the " matura" , the Polish Baccalaureat.

The new government to which belonged the League, also applies to " démarxiser" Polish administration. It is the continuity of the law known as " of lustration" voted by the left government in 1997. Thus, the minister of education held by Roman Giertych strongly saw itself purged by this last. In the same way, the same fate was reserved for the former president of the Diet in 2004, and for the , Minister for Finance Zyta Gilowska in June 2006.
